Know Why You Want To Blog
Writing for blogs is an easy way to make money as a
freelancer, but it can also serve other purposes. Your blog might be focused on
your industry or field of expertise. If you're already working in that field,
your blog could help attract potential employers. At its most basic level,
though, blogging is just another way to express yourself and connect with
others. You should always be blogging because you enjoy doing it, not because
you want people to read what you have to say. The best bloggers are passionate
about their topics and have something they want—or need—to say.
Choose Your Niche
The first step in becoming a blogger is choosing your
niche. This can seem intimidating, especially for aspiring bloggers who don't
know how to choose one. But it doesn't have to be that hard. The best way to go
about finding your niche is by picking topics you love and/or are interested in
writing about. To start narrowing down your options, make a list of all of
these interests; they can be anything from travel and fashion, food and drink,
or books and reading material – anything!
Set Realistic Goals
The word blogging can seem intimidating at first glance.
There are all sorts of blogging tutorials, tips and tricks out there that often
make it seem like you need to have your own website or start writing full-time
in order to call yourself a blogger. All those things may be helpful down the
road, but they don't really matter when you're just starting out. Pick up your
camera and take photos every day; use social media sites like Twitter and
Instagram (owned by Facebook) as tools for sharing them, and share stories
about what you're doing with family and friends. In other words, just become
involved in sharing your life's experiences with others—it doesn't need to be
anything elaborate at first.
Choose your blogging platform.
One of the easiest ways to become a blogger is also one
of the most overlooked: choosing your blogging platform. There are literally
dozens of platforms you can choose from, but WordPress is by far one of the
most popular—and for a good reason. Not only does it have an immense amount of
plug-ins and themes that help make your site easy on both your eyes and
Google's, but it's also free! Of course, there are other free options available
(blogger, Weebly is another favourite), but WordPress has been around for a
long time and has become synonymous with blogging in general.
Promote Yourself and Get Traffic
Getting traffic to your website is an incredibly
difficult thing to do. It's hard enough just trying to figure out what your
target audience would like in order to get them to come back, but when you
don't have as much experience, it can be even more difficult. Getting started
with blogging isn't always easy either because you have so many different
options and opportunities available that deciding where and how can be overwhelming.
The first step should be figuring out what sort of content would work best for
your needs by using Google Keyword Planner. Then all you need is some
determination and perseverance; there are no shortcuts or easy ways around
creating successful content for your audience.
Stay Organized
If you find that your motivation wanes after seeing
everything you have to do and you end up procrastinating, an easy way to stay
on top of all your blogging tasks is to stay organized. Use a task manager like
Wunderlist or Google Tasks and colour code your tasks by their urgency level,
setting daily reminders and rewards for yourself if necessary. The added
incentive of seeing everything in one place will help keep you focused on
executing each step as planned. In addition, many content management systems
(CMS) include powerful drag-and-drop functionality that makes it easy to add
all kinds of multimedia items—from videos and infographics to audio files—to
your posts with minimal effort.
Work on New Content Regularly
Working on new content regularly isn't as easy as it
might sound. So, if you're looking for an easy way to start blogging without
worrying about coming up with content topics every week, consider starting your
own podcast. Simply interview your favourite experts in various fields and
publish recordings of those conversations online. You can develop a regular
audience for your podcast (and attract interested readers for your own site),
and you can use podcasts as inspiration for related articles on your site. The
more you work on producing podcasts, too, the easier it will be to come up with
topics for future episodes!
Do Not Give Up
It's hard to stay motivated, especially when you start
seeing little progress. Don't let your effort go unnoticed or get lost in
obscurity. Stay positive, engage with others and continue to produce
interesting content that adds value to your readers. Don't give up. Your hard
work will pay off with results. If you aren't getting feedback from search
engines or email lists, build an audience by guest blogging on other blogs and
through social media engagement—being active in groups on Facebook and Twitter
is an excellent way to find new readers who can help spread the word of your
site once it gets started!
